Park History
The Daniel L. Schaefer Athletic Complex is located on a tract of land that was originally owned by the adjacent
Federal Correctional Institution. In 1972, the Federal Government dedicated 90 acres of Federal Correctional
Institution land to Foothills. Forty of the 90 acres were added to the Foothills Golf Course and the remaining
50 acres became the Athletic Complex. Note: A plaque hung in the Maintenance & Service Center acknowledges
the 90-acre dedication.
The seven acres that comprise fields #92 and #93 were added in 1981. Seven additional
acres east of Independence St. were dedicated in 1992. The final 15 acres adjacent to Weiland School were added
in 2001.
The name was changed to the Daniel L. Schafer Athletic Complex in 1993. Congressman Schafer was a
former member of the Foothills Board of Directors and was instrumental in the land acquisitions at the
Athletic Complex.
