Twelfth Night – Director’s Notes
When Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night, it was meant to close the Christmas season – a time of revelry, misrule, and disguise. In this spirit, our production leans into joy and absurdity (with a dash of bittersweet), while shifting the setting to a summer garden in coastal North Carolina.
At its core, Twelfth Night asks: who are we when the usual rules no longer apply? When gender and class are turned upside down, what truths emerge? Characters fall in love with masks, and sometimes, to their own delight or horror, with the reality beneath.
Thank you to this extraordinary group of actors and crew for their courage, humor, and heart. And thank you, audience, for sharing this celebration with us. May you leave tonight with a smile – and perhaps a question or two about your own disguises.
Enjoy the show.
